Logy from Labor Day grillings and the similar grillings of releasing WiX v3.10, today's meeting was brief, with only three issues to triage.
Issue triage
Feature 4881 | WiX 3.10 should populate the error code column in VS 2015 is a suggestion that WiX tool error codes should appear in the error list window in Visual Studio 2015. The error code column is new to Visual Studio 2015 but apparently, though WiX errors and warnings follow the standard(s) for formatting messages, it's not automatically included in the error list window. It's a fine suggestion we can take whenever someone wants to do the work.
Bug 4884 | After installing Wix-Toolset Visual Studio 2013 still says that the project type is incompatible reported a problem with WiX v3.8 not integrating into Visual Studio 2013. As that's something generally known to work, we asked the reporter to send logs to wix-users for further assistance.
Bug 4885 | RunOnce is triggered during installation on Windows7 x86 systems. is reminiscent of a Burn bug we had and fixed in WiX v3.8, when driver installation would trigger the
RunOnce
registry entry Burn makes to manage chained installations across reboots. Given that that particular bug was specific to Windows XP-era OSes, we requested the reporter provide logs so we can investigate this on a more modern OS.
WiX v3.10
WiX v3.11 and WiX v4.0
With WiX v3.10 out the virtual door, we discussed the next version of WiX v3.x, what it might be, and how it relates to WiX v4.0.
Most of the people who've contributed to WiX v3.x have expressed interest in being able to focus more on WiX v4.0—a virtuous cycle, where more people working in the code find the bugs and get the code ready faster.
We're also at a point in WiX v3.x where v3.10 satisfies support of the latest Visual Studio and with no new version of Visual Studio on the immediate horizon, we have a window where v3.x doesn't need the attention of so many contributors.
The consensus was that v3.11 will be open for bug fixes and support for the next version of Visual Studio, whenever that becomes available in preview form. New features will have to face more scrutiny.
Talk of WiX v4.0 focused on what features we think are important to get in and when we want to ship v4.0, which is turn drives how much time exists for additional feature work.
Discussion is ongoing about both releases, so feel free to drop in on the live weekly meeting or send mail to wix-devs to participate.
